gold and cameo locket

A Neo-Renaissance style, 18-carat gold locket with two, large, 19th-century banded agate cameos opening as a locket. On one side a bust of a man in profile is carved from a three-layered white, pink, and brown agate, and on the other side a bust of a woman is carved from a two-layered white and brown agate, each in Roman attire. Around the locket is a border of white-and-red striped enamel; on one side are four cabochon-cut sapphires and on the other four cushion-cut diamonds, all in a box setting. These elements and the hoop are decorated with delicate scrolls with white and pink enamel, and with three hanging natural pearls with enamel caps at the end. Most likely English in origin. Circa 1870.
