Triumph of Love micro mosaic
A micromosaic in an 18 carat gold brooch mounting with a mother of pearl back. The mosaic depicts Amor in his chariot, within one hand the laurel of victory and in the other a palm symbolising peace. In his chariot are all of the attributes of the other gods that Amor, as the god and symbol of Love, has defeated: the lion skin and club of Hercules, the helmet of Mars, the flute of Pan, the Aesculapius of Mercury, the trident of Neptune, the crown of Juno and the fire of Zeus. The winged putto in front riding a griffin and Cerberus, the guard of the underworld, pulls the chariot. This scene symbolises the Triumph of Love. Rome, circa 1830.
The fourteenth-century Italian poet Petrarch wrote a series of poems known as the Triumphs. They celebrate six victories: of Love, Chastity, Death, Fame, Time and Faith. Petrarch’s Triumphs were a favourite subject for prints, and objects de vertu like this spectacular micro-mosaic.
