pietra dura box
A 19th century silver gilt box of Ashford Black Marble (this is a dark limestone from mines near Ashford-in-the-Water) inlaid with pietra dura with different agates also all from around Derbyshire. During the early years of the 19th century, artists, having seen examples of Florentine pietra dura in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire at nearby Chatsworth House, started producing the Derbyshire pietra dura. This was considered equal to the finest produced in Florence, and examples were shown at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
