gold ‘Gage D’amitié box

A canted rectangular patch or snuff box. The lid is decorated with the words ‘Gage D’amitié’ (token of friendship) set in old cut diamonds and embellished with gold sprays of foliage and tassels. The ground consists of translucent, royal blue enamel over an engraved guilloche pattern. Framed with a border of foliage and floral designs and white enamel lines. The canted corners feature a vase with flowers framed by gold foliage. The four sides of the box are engraved with a guilloche design stopped with translucent, blue enamel, also framed with scrolling leaves and a white enamel line. Swiss, with a master mark, possibly for George Remond, second half 18th century.
