In 1957, the Russian satellite “Sputnik” was launched, and with it a popular jewelry theme. Brazilian jewelry house H. Stern was the first to create a line of Sputnik jewelry in the 1950s, designed to showcase the variety of gemstones mined in Brazil. Many designers have revived this theme since; Cartier contributed to its popularity in the 1960s and Seaman Schepps recently made Sputnik pieces for their Spring 2012 collection.
