micro mosaic with birds and flowers
A beautiful early and fine 19th-century Italian micro mosaic plaque with bouquets and four finches on a branch. The copper plaque must have once been part of a box or a piece of furniture.
The goldfinch – top left – in particular, is seen as a magical bird and it is often used in mosaics. As the goldfinch only eats thistles it was also the bird seen searching for food in Jezus’ crown supposedly wanting to free him which resulted in the finch’s red feathers. Also in Raphael’s painting, you see Jezus and John the Baptist playing with the bird which is a referral to Jezus Christ’s future passion.
