‘Fer de Berlin’ butterfly earrings

A fine pair of – day and night –
‘Fer de Berlin’ earrings.

Iron jewels and works of art have been made since the 18th century. But iron jewelry became most popular during the Napoleontic Wars when the Germans gave their gold to support the country and one got iron jewelry in return (Gold gab ich für Eisen).

These butterfly earrings are attributed to Karl Friedrich Schinkel circa 1830. Dutch import marks for 1831-1893.
