A 14 carat gold Egyptian Revival ring set with a Ceylon sapphire carved in the shape of a scarab, the inside decorated with hieroglyph inspired carvings, the shank decorated with papyrus leaves, signed: Thomas F. Brogan, New York, circa 1920.

Thomas Brogan was born in NYC (1858-1933). From the age of 13 he worked for Tiffany & Co. for seven years, and them several other firms, before finally starting his own business. In 1890 he focused on novelty jewellery and was very active in jeweller’s circles; he also produced silver for T.B. Starr. Before WWI he teamed up with John R. Keim, a diamond specialist.
